Dear Legislators: As a citizen of the Oakesdale School District in Oakesdale, WA, I write to you as a concerned citizen regarding school funding and the statements made by Governor Gregoire concerning school consolidation. It is well known that the State of Washington is facing a tremendous financial crisis, however, I urge you to not impact public school funding while working through this issue. Not unfamiliar to you as a state legislator is Article IX, Section I, Preamble of the Washington State Constitution, which states: ÒIt is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders, without distinction or preference on account of race, color, caste, or sex.Ó By making cuts in current educational funding, all school districts will be hurt, directly impacting students. To address the StateÕs financial situation with education dollars seems contrary to the Constitution itself, and to the notion that todayÕs students must be educated to a very high level to be knowledgeable and competitive in the global, 21st century economy they will be a part of. Further, by even considering school consolidation as part of government reform goes against any economic stimulus, and further reduces the quality of education received by the children of our community. Local business and local pride will disappear if our school is consolidated away from our town. Other small towns, business and communities within, have fallen victim to previous consolidation efforts and we do not wish the same fate upon Oakesdale. As a citizen of the Oakesdale School District I urge you to pass a budget that is education friendly, urge you to work towards full education funding, and to take a hard stand against any consolidation effort. Sincerely, ___________________________________________, Citizen of the Oakesdale School District |
