Dear Parents,

This letter is to inform you about and help you prepare for a potential swine flu outbreak. News stories this morning are indicating cases of the swine flu having reached Washington.

Local health officials are working closely with state and federal health authorities.

To keep the flu from spreading to more people, we ask you to keep sick children at home. Any children who become sick while at school will be sent home.

Public health officials want you to protect yourself and your family against the possibility of swine flu. Here are some ways to stop the spread of germs and sickness and for taking care of your family.

-       Keep children who are sick at home. DonŐt send them to school.

-       If someone in your home is sick with flu-like symptoms including a fever greater than 1000F, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, chills, headache and body aches, contact your health care provider.

-       Teach your children to wash hands a lot with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.

-       Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow or shoulder. Be sure they know to toss their used tissues into a waste bin and set a good example by doing this yourself.

-     Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.

Please check with your health care provider or your local health department if you have any questions. You can stay up-to-date with current conditions by visiting www.cdc.gov or www.doh.wa.gov.

Sincerely,
